Why the people of Haarlem are eager to please - English-speaking visitors? It
is not necessary to go very far back to find the reason. Eight years to be exact.
Thén we were eating tulip-bulbs. Now we put them to better use; to spread
a bit of beauty and happiness. There in a nutshell is the reason that you, from
the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth or the United States will find a quick
smile and a warm hospitality from a usually reserved people during your stay
over here.
No, we do no longer eat tulip-bulbs A la sugar-beet. You'll find that the Dutch
cuisine has come into its own again. You'll find too, that we have made a good
recovery, although we are not bragging about that, because we could not have
done it alone. And you will also find that we are ready to tackle the immense
task of repairing the devastation, that our age-old enemy, the water, brought
over our country recently.
You will find proof of that spirit at the „Flora 1953", where Dutch craftsman
ship, knowledge and hard work together have produced something unequalled
in the world. It is a show of a remarkable industry, a happy industry, out to
produce beauty and better living for many millions all over the world. It will
show to the British visitor, of course a gardener at heart, what the Dutch
bulb-country and the growers of Aalsmeer can do to make his garden a more
delightful and accomplished jewel. It will show our American guests how our
flowers can bring peace and leisure to a very busy life. And as to foreign experts,
we don't have to tell them anything, they will just have to lóók.
Even to those visitors who have not for some reason or another their own
garden, the Flora 1953" will be an unforgettable experience. They can roam
at will along the beds of sweet-smelling hyacinths, fluttering daffodils and long
elegant tulips varying in colours from soft subdues pastel-hues, delicate yellows
and deep purples to wildly flaming reds.
Then of course the „Flora 1953" is not a mere flower-show. It is an event in
which the whole of Greater Haarlem takes part. The whole region will breathe
an air of gay festivity, not in the least the venerable old city of Haarlem itself.
And Haarlem in a way embodies the tradition of beauty by craftsmanship of
which the Dutch are so very proud.
It is not at all necessary to provide you with a guide of „You should do this and
you should see that" to enjoy yourself in Haarlem and be moved by its many
beauties. All you need to do is walk right in and you will find yourself in a
veritable jewel-box of age-old architecture. You will want to see the grey and
majestic St. Bavo Cathedral, the gem of the Renaissance that the Shambles
really are, the Town-hall, that dates back from the time when plumed knights
held their tournaments right under its balcony and the Frans Hals-museum,
all at the same time.
Or, if you want to leave the beaten track, you will take a walk on a moonlit
night along the Spaarne and through the quiet back-streets of the old part of
the city. There you will se silver light play tenderly over Golden Age-facades,
silhouetting them against a velvet sky and making true a dream of ages that
stool" still.
Still, we do not propose, that you spend al your stay on the contemplation of
quiet beauty. Such as a matter of fact would probably make our restaurant
and cabaret-owners very angry indeed. For they went to great lengths to give
you the time of your life. Excellent meals and wonderful fun, that is what they
want to provide you with. And what with Haarlem itself, all dressed up for the
occasion with lights and gay ornaments, we have no doubts that your stay will
be a memorable one.

Aan de vooravond van de inter
nationale bloemen tentoonstelling
„Flora 1953!', die gedurende twee
maanden in onze gemeente ge
houden zal worden, meen ik juist
te handelen daarover een enkel
woord onder de publieke aandacht
te brengen.
Reclame te maken voor de ten
toonstelling ligt niet op mijn weg.
Dat zou trouwens ook overbodig
zijn, want de bekwame en vol
ijverige directie heeft dat, zowel in
binnen- als buitenland, op vak
kundige wijze gedaan.
Maandenlang jiebben zij, die zich
in de onmiddellijke omgeving van
Groenendaal ophielden, kunnen
waarnemen hoe op het terrein,
waar de tentoonstelling zal worden
gehouden, de activiteit steeds toe
nam. Voortdurend zagen wij de
aanleg vorderen. Er is in Groenen
daal iets groots, iets onvergelij
kelijk schoons tot stand gebracht.
Enkele weken geleden, toen ons land getroffen werd door een zo ernstige
ramp, vreesde men een ogenblik, dat deze ramp haar schaduw ook over
de Flora 1953 zou werpen. Hare Majesteit onze Koningin heeft evenwel
door Haar bereidheid om de tentoonstelling officieel te openen, doen
blijken dat Haar volk niet bij de pakken moet neerzitten, doch zich moet
vermannen en de hand aan de ploeg moet slaan. In de noodgebieden is
dat met bekwame spoed gebeurd en wij hier, in de bloembollentuin van
Nederland, maken ons op om de gehele wereld eens te meer te tonen, tot
welke prestaties onze vakbekwame kwekers en architecten in staat zijn.
Heemstede heeft zich voorbereid de honderdduizenden bezoekers waardig
te ontvangen.
Moge het zó worden, dat met name tal van buitenlanders onder de indruk
geraken van het gebodene. De goede naam die ons volk, zoals juist dezer
dagen zo overduidelijk gebleken is, in de wereld geniet, zal daardoor nog
beter bekend worden.
Terwijl ik dit stukje schreef, kwam mij onwillekeurig het gedichtje van
Guido Gezelle in de gedachten, dat luidt:
„Mij spreekt de blomme een tale
Mij is het kruid beleefd
Mij groet het altemale,
Wat God geschapen heeft".
In het vertrouwen, dat velen in deze geest van de Flora 1953 zullen
genieten, geef ik gaarne uiting aan mijn hartgrondige wens, dat de tentoon
stelling in alle opzichten aan onze hooggespannen verwachtingen zal voldoen.

luxe, calme et volupté"
il rendit grand service a la propagande des valeurs touristiques des Pays-Bas.
Ces vers ue sont pas seulement une recommandation d'un grand poète lyrique,
mais il s'y trouve surtout une suite logique des impressions captivantes qu'of-
frent les paysages et les villes d'un territoire si varié en ses aspects.
Or les célèbres champs de tulipes constituent un de ces aspects renonvelant
chaque année leur charme pour une foule d'admirateurs, tant Hollandais
qu'étrangers.
Aujourd'hui aux abords de Harlem, depuis des siècles le centre commercial de
cette région de la culture des plantes bulbeuses, une manifestation internationale
des connaissances professionelles, mieux encore, de I'amour approfondi des
jardiniers-fleuristes néerlandais pour la nature, s'ouvre.
Nous n'avons pas besoin de vanter les mérites de cette „FLORA 1953", unissant
sur un terrain pittoresque de vingt hectares toute la splendeur des crocus, des
narcisses, des jacinthes, des tulipes, pour ne citer que les espèces les plus
connues, dans une diversité inouie.
Une visite a FLORA vous permettra, mieux qu'une promenade a travers les
champs de fleurs, d'apprécier un tel enchantement de la nature.
Et après? Alors, Harlem vous attend, chef-lieu de province, comprenant tant
de beautés historiques a cóté d'une industrieuses'est revêtve d'une parure
éblouissante qui ne manquera pas de séduire beaucoup de monde.
Le jour ses places et ses rues se montrent joyeuses dans une decoration
de lignes audacieuses; la nuit ses grands monuments du passé se baignent dans
une lumière douce reflétant les siècles passés dans leurs fagades ciselées.
Oh! II faut entrer cette église imposante de Saint Bavon oü les sons des
orgues majestueuses frémissent sous les voütes. II faut se promener sous la lueur
des candélabres de la Salie des Citoyens dans le vieux Hötel de Ville ou bien
s'attendrir un peu dans les quartiers les plus intimes de la ville en fête.
Certainement vous irez au musée Frans Hals avec sa collection de toiles
évoquant les gloires des gardes civiques et surtout des banquets de ces braves.
II y a encore ce petit coin de Harlem, le village Spaarndam, oü on trouve la statue
du petit Pierre, le gamin légendaire qui a sauvé la Hollande septentrionale de la
force détruisante des vagues en poussant son petit doigt dans la brèche d'une
digue brisée.
Enfin, vous aimerez vous divertir d'une facon plus frivole.
Dans ce cas il y a mainte occasion de se régaler.
II y a tant de bons cafés, grands et petits, de restaurants, de cabarets qu'on ne
voit plus les mauvais.
On peut voir dans les caveaux de l'Hótel de Ville les caprices de Polichinelle
ou bien s' amuser a l'autre cóté de la Grande Place, dans l'ancienne Halle a
la viande, chez les étudiants, qui gagnent leur vie et leurs études en riant.
N'oublions pas qu'il faut également dormir. Le Bureau d'hébergement central
(Stationsplein 1 et bureau auxiliaire dans' un kiosque a la FLORA) s'occupe
volontiers de l'hébergement des visiteurs et dispose de plus de 2000 lits dans
les hótels, les pensions et chez des particuliers.
Nous mettions en tête de eet exposé une strophe de Baudelaire. Nous concluons
en citant un autre mot d'un grand Frangais: „J'y suis, j'y reste".
Nous espérons que telle sera la devise d'innombrables de nos hótes et avant
tout qu'ils éprouveront au de la des motifs commerciaux, qui ne sont pas tout
a fait absents de notre activité, le désir d'une nation de maintenir une entente
cordiale entre les peuples et les pays.
