Een onzer die, door familie-omstandigheden daartoe
aangespoord, het Kopenhaagse dagblad „Politiken" leest, trof
in het nummer van 27 december 1962 het volgende verhaal aan,
waarin niet minder dan* 32'Dickens-ti'tels zijn verwerkts
Oliver Twistwho had some very hard times in the battle of
life, and having been saved 'from the wreck of the Qolden Mary
by our mutual friend, Nicholas Nickleby, had just finished
reading aloud a tale of two cities to Martin Chuzzlewit,
during which time the cricket on the hearth had been chirp
ing right merrily, while the chimes from the adjacent church
were heard, and seven poor travellers commenced singing a
Christmas carol. Barnaby Rudge then arrived from the old
curiosity shop with some pictures of Italy and sketches by
Boz, to show to little Dorrit. She was busy with the Pickwick
papers when David Copperfield, who had been taking american
notes entered, and informed the company that the great ex
pectations of Dombey Son, regarding Mrs.Lirripers legacy
had not been realized and that had seen the boots of the
Holly Tree Inn, taking somebody's luggage to Mrs. Lirriper's
lodgings in a street that has no thoroughfare opposite bleak
house, where the haunted man, who had just given one of Dr.
Margold's presceptions to an uncommercial traveller who was
brooding over the mystery of Edwin Drood.
Uit Haarlems Dagblad vernamen wij, dat een Utrechts jon
getje van twaalf, een jaar lang voor zijn huisgenoten een dag
blad schreef. Behalve het „hot news" bevatte „The Times;i ook
vaste rubriekens kerknieuws, radio- en t.v. - programma's,
weeroverzichtenbeursnoteringen en boekbesprekingen, zelfs
een serie daarvan, getiteld „De werken van Charles Dickens."
Ook gaf het Haarlems Dagblad (307de jaargang, nr. 300)
weer eens het woord aan Charles Dickenss „Als wij niet leren
onze plicht te doen jegens onze ondergeschikten, zullen zij
nooit leren hun plicht te doen jegens- ons (Uit David Copper
