droefheid ontvangen. Men vergat er even de ellende van de
Frans-Duitse oorlog door.
Zelf had Charles Dickens de wens te kunnen gegeven, op het
kleine lieflijke kerkhof van Shorne vlak "bij Gad's Hill "begraven
te worden of anders dicht bij de kathedraal van Rochester. Maar
Engeland heeft het anders gewild, en hem een ereplaats gegeven
in de Westminster Abdij, in de Poet's Corner, de Dichtershoek.

ance which are quite well described, and they encounter hyper-
romantic love affairs and a sentimental death. The book was re
printed in 1902.
In case it should be thought that Dickens's works are a thing
of the past in presentday Holland, I should like to end by
mentioning a completely new post-war translation of his works
(with the original illustrations) in 34 parts (supplemented
by John Forster's biography) in a paper-back edition selling
at less than half a crown a volume. A Dutch Section of The
Dickens Fellowship was also founded in 1947? its President be
ing the brilliant comic author, Godfried Bomans.
