een woordspeling die is gebaseerd op de
gelijkluidendheid van twee of meer totaal
verschillende woorden. Deze techniek
L,gebruikt Dickens met mate. In Dombey.
and Son zegt Mrs Chick tegen haar
vriendin:
"Lucretia Tox, my eyes are opened to
you all at once. The scales," here Mrs
Chick cast down an imaginary pair such
as are commonly used in grocers' shops,
"have fallen from my sight." Dombey
and Son, ch. 29)
De grap is hier dat Mrs Chick het woord
"scales" in de door haar gebezigde uit
drukking niet correct begrijpt als schil
fers, maar als een weegschaal. In een
Nederlandse vertaling zou hier een
woordspeling met het woord "schellen"
mogelijk zijn. In Martin Chuzzlewit legt
de half-demente klerk van Jonas Chuzz
lewit, Mr Chuffey, alles wat tot hem
doordringt uit in termen van zijn levens
lange missie, het boekhouden. Bedroefd
over de dood van zijn baas:
"Come, Mr Chuffey," said Pecksniff.
"Come with me. Summon up your forti
tude, Mr Chuffey."
"Yes, I will," returned the old clerk.
"Yes, I'll sum up my forty—How many
times forty Oh, Chuzzlewit and Son..."

Het vijfde en laatste procédé is de inwen
dige willekeurige schikking. Hierbij
wordt een gesloten systeem (bijvoorbeeld
het alfabet) als uitgangspunt genomen.
Meerdere malen voert Dickens hele alfa
betische lijsten van fictieve politici ten
tonele, of van denkbeeldige cliënten van
een advokaat, of van de gasten aan een
diner. Zo heeft Sir Leicester Dedlock in
Bleak House een conversatie met Lord
Boodle, "of considerable reputation with
his party", die hem vertelt hoe slecht het
er met de politiek voor staat:
He perceives with astonishment, that
supposing the present Government to be
overthrown, the limited choice of the
Crown, in the formation of a hew minis
try, would lie between Lord Coodle and
Sir Thomas Doodle—supposing it-to be
impossible for the Duke of Foodie to act
with Goodie, which may be assumed to
be the case in consequence of the breach
arising out of that affair with Hoodie.
Then, giving the Home Department and
the Leadership of the House of Com
mons to Joodle, the Exchequer to Kood-
le, the Colonies to Loodle, and the
Foreign Office to Moodle, what are you
to do with Noodle? You can't offer him
the Presidency of the Council; that is
reserved for Poodle You can't put him
in the Woods and Forests; that is hardly
good enough for Quoodle. What fol
lows? That the country is shipwrecked,
lost, and gone to pieces (as is made
manifest to the patriotism of Sir Leices
ter Dedlock), because you can't provide
for Noodle! (Bleak House, ch. 12)
Volgt een alinea waarin het al even on-
-verkwikkelijke alternatief blijkt te be
staan uit een soortgelijke roedel van poli
tici uit het andere kamp die loopt van
Buffy tot en met Puffy. Op soortgelijke
wijze vult de jongste bediende van de
weinig succesvolle advokaat Mortimer
Lightwood in Our Mutual Friend het
afsprakenboek met "Mr Aggs, Mr
Baggs, Mr Caggs, Mr Daggs, Mr Faggs,
Mr Gaggs, Mr Boffin" en het bezoekers-
boek met "Mr Alley, Mr Bailey, Mr
Calley, Mr Dalley, Mr Falley, Mr Hal-
ley, Mr Lalley, Mr Malley. And Mr
Boffin" (ch. 8). De overeenkomst met
een sketch uit Monty Python's Flying
Circus is treffend.
Ook zonder de indeling in vijf types die
ik er van heb gegeven, is het nonsensi-
kale in de aangehaalde voorbeelden, denk
ik, wel duidelijk. Ook is het duidelijk dat
de passages in hun context altijd kunnen
worden herleid tot "zin". Zo lijdt het
geen twijfel dat Dickens met zijn door
