"All was over in a moment. I had fullfil-
led my destiny. I was a captive and a
slave. I loved Dora Spenlow to distracti
on! She was more than human to me.
She was a fairy, a Sylph, I don't know
what she was - anything that no one ever
saw, and everything that everybody ever
wanted. I was swallowed up in an abyss
of love in an instant. There was no pau
sing on the brink: no looking down, or
looking back: I was gone, headlong,
before I had the sense to say a word to
her.
Later
probeert Betsey Trotwood tevergeefs om
David tot enige relativering te brengen,
als ze over Dora zegt:
"And you mean to say the little thing is
very fascinating, I suppose?"
"Ah. And not silly?" said my aunt.
"Not light-headed?"said my aunt.
"Well, well" said my aunt. "I only ask. I
don't depreciate her. Poor little couple!
And so you think you were formed for
one another, and you are to go through a
party-supper-table kind of life, like two
pretty pieces of confectionery, do you,
Trot?"
"Ah, Trot!" said my aunt, shaking her
head, and smiling gravely: "blind, blind,
blind!".
Geleidelijk merkt David dat Dora niet
volmaakt is.
men. Dit plan wordt direct afgewezen
-door Julia Mills,- Dora's hartsvriendin:
"No. The suggestion is not appropiate to
our Dora. Our dearest Dora is a favouri
te child of nature. She is a thing of light,
and airiness, and joy."
Even later lezen we wat "a favourite
child of nature" wel doet:"After tea we
had the guitar: and Dora sang those same
dear old French songs about the impossi
bility of ever on any account leaving of
dancing, La ra la, La ra la, until I felt a
much greater Monster than before.
"David Copperfield" als "Bildungsro-
man" beschouwend, kunnen we ons
"It'will be your duty, and it will be your
pleasure too, - - - to estimate her (as
you chose her) by the qualities she has,
and not by the qualities she may not
have. The latter you must develop in her,
if you can. And if you cannot, child",
here my aunt rubbed her nose, "you
must just accustom yourself to do with
out 'em."
Dan volgt "the ordeal of servants":
bedienden en leveranciers bedriegen en
bestelen het jonge paar voortdurend,
omdat ze in de gaten hebben dat Dora
het niet merkt of er niets van durft te
zeggen. David ziet dan in dat de schuld
deels ook bij henzelf ligt, omdat ze te
veel verleiding en gelegenheid scheppen:
"I begin to be afraid that the fault is not
entirely on one side, but that these peop
le all turn out ill because we don't turn
out very well ourselves.
De derde les is "the forming of her
mind". David vat het plan op om Dora's
intellectuele ontwikkeling te vergroten,
en hij doet dat bijvoorbeeld door inge
wikkelde, educatief bedoelde, gesprekken
te voeren met zijn vriend Traddles, als
Doia; erbij is. -Voor Dora is dit een bë-~
proeving - en misschien voor Taddles
ook - totdat het tot David doordringt dat
