verder nog de tweeling James and John uit "To be read at Dusk".
Geen twee- of meerlingen, maar toch very look-a-like zijn er voldoende te vinden. Ik
noem een aantal: de Flintwitches uit "Little Dorrit", Jeremiah and Ephraim, die als
eikaars double optreden. De Spenlow-sisters, Clarissa and Lavinia, "both dressed
alike". De Misses Willes, waarvan er een trouwt met Mr. Robinson. Maar wie dat
blijft voor iedereen, inclusief de nieuwsgierige buren onduidelijk. Of is Mr. Robinson,
net als Jobson, wellicht een mormoon?
De drie dochters van Skimpole: "This", said Mr. Skimpole, "is my beauty daughter
Arethusa - plays and sings. This is my sentimental daughter Laura - plays a little but
do'nt sing. This is my comedy daughter Kitty - sings a little but don't play". Let u toch
vooral op de nuances. En wat dacht u van de vijf gebroeders Pardiggle: Egbert,
Oswald, Francis, Felix, Alfred. Zij hebben niet alleen gemeen dat zij allen geheel
vrijwillig hun zakgeld afstaan aan allerlei goede doelen, maar ook de invloed hiervan
op hun humeur.
Dan de Briggs family in hun constante strijd met de Tauntons: "If the Briggses
appeared in smart bonnets, the Miss Tauntons eclipsed them with smarter. If Mrs.
Taunton appeared in a cap of all the colours of the rainbow, Mrs. Briggs forthwith
mounted a toque with all the patterns of the kaleidoscoop. The Tauntons had once
gained a temporary triumph with the assistance of a harp, but the Briggses brought
three guitars into the field and effectually routed the enemy".
Ook de "seven spinster daughters"van Mrs. Parker Johnson zijn gewikkeld in een
constante strijd met hun rivalen, de three misses Brown. Van de leerlingen van Dr.
Blimber die, als zij gaan wandelen, allen op elkaar lijken met hun "largest possible
shirt-collars and the stiffest possible cravats", kun je nog zeggen dat de gelijkenis
door Mrs. Blimber was opgelegd.
Soms lijken ook bezigheden te leiden tot eenduidigheid. De Barnacle's, als de
bemanning van het Circumlocution Office, doen hun naam letterlijk eer aan. En ook
de professing Philanthropist van Mr. Honeythunder (guardian of the Landless twins)
lijken niet alleen op elkaar, maar vooral ook op professionele vuistvechters. "Mr.
Crisparkle had now an opportunity of observing that as to the phrenological
formation of the backs of their heads, the professing Philanthropist were uncommonly
like the Pugilists".
Dickens baseerde soms zijn karakters deels op personen uit zijn direkte omgeving.
Bekend moge zijn dat Mr. Micawber elementen van zijn eigen vader heeft, en Mrs.
Nickleby elementen van zijn moeder. Maria Beadnell, een oude liefde van Dickens,
stond zelfs tweemaal model, eerst voor Dora Spenlow en later als Flora Finching.
