Civic Reception at Durham Town
Hall, visited by Dickens on his
1858 national reading tour.
Thursday 31st July
Morning - Lectures to coffee time.
Trip to Beamish Museum, the
famous open-air museum where
you can glimpse life in a north east
town, in a colliery village, go
underground in a drift mine, visit a
farm, a manor house, travel behind
a replica of Stephenson's
"Locomotion" and much more
(packed lunch provided).
Return to Durham for dinner.
Evening entertainment by SNUG
(Special Needs Unity Group) - a
lively, tuneful and joyful evening
promised.
Friday 1st August
Morning Lectures
Newcastle by train after lunch -
journey takes about 15 minutes.
Glimpse the "Angel of the North"
en route.
In Newcastle, there will be an
optional walking tour past Dickens
- connected sites down to the
Quayside, where tours in the
Guildhall with it's 18th Century
Courtroom.
There will be time to cross the
River Jyne by the new Millennium
Bridge to visit the Sage Concert
Hall Baltic Ait Gallery, or to
return into Newcastle.
There are plenty of trains between
Newcastle and Durham, so you can
spend as much time as you please
in Newcastle.
Return to Durham for Dinner.
Evening entertainment.
Saturday 2nd August
Trip to Barnard Castle and Bowes,
with time in the Bowes Museum.
Banquet.
Sunday 3rd August
Morning Lectures.
Afternoon - service at Durham
Cathedral.
Dinner.
Proposed evening candlelit tour of
Cathedral.
Branch entertainment.
Monday 4th August
Leave after breakfast
