Per trein richting Cumberland, de knapzak op de rug, op weg naar avontuur weg van
de beslommeringen van alle dag. Het is vermakelijk om het hele verhaal te lezen:
triviale gebeurtenissen die worden afgewisseld met kryptische opmerkingen. Een
voorbeeld:
"It is no trouble Tom to fall in love"said Goodchild shaking his head. "It's trouble
enough to fall out of it, once you are in it,"retorted Tom. "So keep out of it
altogether. It would better for you if you did the same.
"Mr. Goodchild, who is always in love with somebody, and not unffequently with
several objects at once, made no reply."
En zo gingen Francis Goodchild Thomas Idle op stap, elkaar amuserend met
geestige conversatie, eerst naar Carlisle vandaar verder naar Wigton om vandaar per
koets verder te reizen naar Hesket Newmarket om the Carrock Feil te beklimmen.
Bij die beklimming in storm, mist en regen verstuikt Collins zijn enkel. Dickens
wandelt vanaf dat moment vooral alleen. Van de Feil naar Allonby, een vergeten
vissersplaatsje. Daar bleven ze een paar dagen. Citaat uit Household Words "There
is the sea, cried Mr. Goodchild, pointing out of the window; and here" pointing to
the lunch on the table "are shrimps. Let us-" here Mr. Goodchild looked out of
window, as if in search of something, and looked in again,- "let us eat them.
NB. Het is nog steeds mogelijk om in hetzelfde etablissement waar Dickens en
Collins vertoefden garnalen te eten en whiskey, zoals dat toen geschreven werd, te
drinken.
