afgekeurd. Literatuur, zo wordt dan geredeneerd, is een instrument in handen van de
heersende klasse die haar ideeën wil opleggen aan minder machtigen door het
uitvinden van grote verhalen. De uitvinding wordt dan gedacht eigenlijk een
rookgordijn te zijn.
Parker is niet uitgegaan van de gedachte dat het voldoende is de teksten te
bestuderen en dat de auteur samenvalt met zijn geschriften. Hij heeft heel zorgvuldig
de biografie van Dickens bestudeerd en onderzoek gedaan naar de
tijdsomstandigheden waarin Dickens werkte. Hij geeft, net als overigens Standiford,
zij het op een andere manier, alle aandacht aan wat heet de persoonlijke context.
Volgens Parker kwam Dickens' belangstelling voor kerst voort uit een fascinatie met
een populaire traditie. Standiford gaat uitvoeriger in op de benarde financiële
omstandigheden van Dickens die hem noopten A Christmas Carol te schrijven, "to
rescue his career." De gedachte dat Dickens eigenhandig onze kerstviering heeft
uitgevonden is zeer verleidelijk en klinkt ons als Dickensians natuurlijk plezierig in
de oren. Maar ook zonder die aanspraken zullen wij onverminderd blijven genieten
van zijn kerstverhalen.

The opening of the States-General of the Netherlands took place at the Hague on the
7th by the King in person. The speech from the throne announced that the relations
of the country with all foreign powers were satisfactory, and as regarded the Duchy
of Limburg the difficulties which had arisen from the convulsed state of gennany
were in course of arrangement by such negotiations as would best suit the interest
and honour of the Low Countries. Trade was described as prosperous, and flattering
hopes were put forth as to the future effects of the new navigation laws. The
financial situation was satisfactory; the expected excess would cover the deficiencies
left by the preceding year.
Household Narrative startte in 1850 en is tot 1856 uitgegevn. Het bevatte rubriken
als: The Three Kingdoms, Narrative of Politics, Law Crime, Accident Disaster,
Social Sanitary Municipal Progress etc en behelsde een zakelijke aanvulling op
het reguliere Household Words te zijn.
