Mr. Ernst H. JCrelage. We learn with
very great pleasure that Mr. E. H. Krelage,
world-famous for his knowledge of bulbs and-
bulb cultivation, is alive and well. We under
stand that he has now given up his nursery
business and is devoting his time to the produc
tion of a monumental work on the bulb industry.
Mr. Krelage possesses a wonderful horticultural
and botanical library at Haarlem and is no
longer young, but we trust he will be granted
health and strength to complete the project
upon which he is engaged. It is a pleasure to
learn that the report of Mr. Krelage's demise
was "grossly exaggerated."
Privet Infusion and Black Fly.—On various
occasions, when visiting allotments, we have
been informed, with an air of certitude, than an
infusion of the common Privet shoots sprayed
over Broad Beans and other plants is a sure
preventive .of attacks of the ubiquitous Black
Fly. Butas so often the almost inevitable
but intrudeswe have hitherto failed to
obtain even approximate proportionsthe
reply to our enquiry being to the effect that the
Privet shoots are placed in an old saucepan
which is then filled with water and boiled for an
unstated time. As this idea of the efficacy of
Privet infusion is moderately, prevalent in
the Metropolitan area, it would be interesting to
know if there is any foundation for it.
The Demonstration Allotment Plot at
Kew.The interest of the public in the Demon
stration Allotment Plot at Kew continues almost
unabated and, as may be expected, it does not
end in admiring and envying the excellent crops
that are grown there. A goodly number come
prepared with questions concerning their pwn
particular troubles. Miss Sanders, the present
Senior Demonstrator, told us recently that
besides the expected enquiries relating to
insecticides, fungicides, intercropping and suc-
eessional planting and the best varieties,"
some of the visitors are keenly interested in the
whys and wherefores of whatever gardening
operation is being performed at the moment.
Which, in view of the fact that a continuance of
food production from allotments and home
gardens is still vitally necessary, is dll to the
good.
