Dear Dr. Krelage,
Mrs. Hollingsworth just finished your chapter X and I am sending this under
separate cover.
She is still working on some of the preceding chapters, these will follow early
next year.
In connection with chapter X, Mrs. Hollingsworth writes: "I think it is a pity
Dr. Krelage expresses himself as he does on my msp. i+2 ff. He has no complaint
whatever to make of the period between May 10, 19U0 and April 8, '\9k5» But he makes
a great deal of American hypocrisy 'the promise of freedom' and American tyranny in
regard to trade restrictions and regulations under what I presume was the Marshall
Flan. The latter, being a human conception, almost inevitably worked some hardships
and injustices - and if the Dutch bulb trade was a victim of these it was deplorable.
I can, too, understand the sympathize with the bitterness left over be"?cause of our
outrageously high tariffs and Quarantine 37» But I find the comparison in emphasis
shocking
"Furthermore Dr. Krelage ignofes the fact that bulbs were used for food during
the German Occupation - and I cannot but feel that this must have had some effect,
good or bad, on the trade Ify Dutch friend tells me she has no way of knowing what
quantity of bulbs went for food for men and cattle, but she would think it was a
great one. Dr. Krelage does mention - parenthetically - the fact that bulbs were
eaten, but he seems to have too soft a spot in hi3 heart for Germans to voice a
criticism.
"Possibly this is not the way he intended his text to sound - but I tell you
that that is how it struck me because I think other readers might easily get the same
impression."
I read the entries to which she refers, some time ago, and did not consider them
too offensive. I am, however, like you thinking in international terms rather than^
along United States lines. As your book is now being published in the U.S.A., it might
be good to revise the entries referred to a bit, at least the wording, in order that
we will not offend the average North American reader. After all, your book is a horti
cultural historical memoir rather than on essay on international economics.
Then, I want to thank you very much for sending me "Een Eeuw Bloembollenteelt"
"which I had never seen before. This is an unusually charming and interesting booklet!
I love the line engraving of your firm's winter garden on page 18. If you think that
this might be fittingly reproduced in your book, I shall be glad to have an engraving
made
