News from Cornell University Press. A selection of essays
about the novels of Charles Dickens will be available in
one volume when „The Dickens Critics", edited by George H,
Ford and Lauriat Lane, Jr., is published by Cornell
University Press on December 26. The essays included were
published between 1841 and i960 as book reviews, articles
in journals, or chapters in books on Dickens. They have
been culled from the writings of such wellknown literary
figures as Henry James, Anthony Trollope, George Orwell,
Graham Greene, and Lionel Trilling. The subjects of the
articles vary from Dickens' humerous characters, the jolly
Christmas scenes, and Dickens as a writer for children to
his social criticism and his desoriptions of corrupt
courts, prisons, and poorhouses. Included also are dis
cussions of plots, characters, form and symbol.
