FRAPPANT TOEVAL
Enige tijd geleden, toen ik, door omstandigheden gedwongen,
"bijna onafgebroken las, kwam ik ook nog eens tot Anthony
Trollope, een tijdgenoot van „The Ininmitable" (een epitheton,
dat vóór mijn gevoel trouwens op ieder goed schrijver toepas
selijk is, in zoverre ieder product van een kunstenaar door de
eigen persoonlijkheid „gemunt" is, en dus onnavolgbaar»)
Ik had juist de herlezing (na de kennismaking in mijn
jeugd) van Nicolas N. en Martin Chuzzlewit, geëindigd, toen
ik dan de „Warden" en „Barchester Towers" (Bantam Classics)
begon. Het zou niet tactvol zijn als „Dutch Dickensian" hier
uiting te geven aan de enigszins ketterse overwegingen en
vergelijkingen, die bij die lezing in me opkwamen. In ieder ge
val was het een boeiende tegenstelling van stofbehandeling
en persoonsbeschrijving» Naar ik meen waren Trollope en
Dickens niet alleen tijdgenoten, maar óók tot op zekere hoog
te „vrienden" en heb ik in een biografie van D„ hén samen af
gebeeld gezien rond één tafel met andere tijdgenoten als
Thackeray, Carlisle e.a.
Op blz.127 van „The Warden" (Penguin edition) stuitte ik
op de volgende passages „Passing into the Strand, he saw in
a bookseller's window the announcement of the first number
of „The Almshouse". So he purchased a copy, and hurrying back
to his lodgings, proceeded to ascertain, what Sir.Popular
Sentiment had to say to the public on the subject, which had
lately occupied so much of his own attentionNow in

We get on with a lighter step and much quicker, imaginary
agonies touch more than true sorrows and monthly novels con
vince, when learned quarto's fail to do so. If the world is
to be set right, the work will- be done by shilling numbers
Of all such reformers Mr.Common Sentiment is the most power
ful. It is incredible, the number of evil practisis, hé was
put down.
It is to be feared he will soon lack subjects ana that,
when he has made the workingclasses comfortable and got
better beer put into propersized pint bottles, there will be
