Dickens als amateur-toneelspeler en regisseur
Zowel thuis als op reis greep Dickens
iedere gelegenheid aan om toneel te spelen.
Talrijk zijn de voorstellingen die hij
organiseerde voor liefdadige doeleinden, zoals
in de jaren van 1845 tot 1850 de
opvoeringen van Ben Johnson's Every Man
in his Humour, met Dickens in de rol van
captain Bodabil. De baten waren bestemd
voor Leigh Hunt en John Poole, collega's in
behoeftige omstandigheden. In 1850 richtten
Dickens en Bulwer Lytton een "Guild of
Literature and Art" op met als doel "to
provide impoverished authors with pecuniary
aid and a free residence*. Bulwer Lytton
schreef Not so bad as we seem, en de eerste
uitvoering was op 16 mei 1851 voor een
exclusief gezelschap waaronder Koningin
Victoria en haar man Prins Albert. Andere
bekende stukken die met succes werden
opgevoerd waren The Lighthouse (1855) en
The Frozen Deep (1857), beide van Dickens'
vriend Wilkie Collins.
