Dickens's family had a long-standing
tradition of reading and performing. From an
early age he was drawn by the stage. He
wrote a few plays, his novels were adopted fo
the theatre, and he was an enthusiastic
amateur actor himself. Yet he acquired more
fame as a reader of his own work.
Men moet iets afweten van het negentiende-
eeuwse theater om Dickens' boeken te be
grijpen, want zij verwoorden dezelfde
boodschap. Alleen in Covent Garden en
Drury Lane was gesproken toneel wettelijk
toegestaan. Dit dwong de kleine theaters om
alternatieve vormen van amusement te be
denken, wat resulteerde in een mengvorm
van theater en circus. Volgens Dickens hield
het theater de mensen een spiegel voor. Het
raakte de grenzen van de gewone werkelijk
heid, gaf onvermoede mogelijkheden aan en
wierp een nieuw licht op het alledaagse
bestaan. Zo stimuleerde het de verbeelding
en vergrootte het de levenservaring van de
toeschouwers.
Adaptions of Dickens's works for radio,
television or the stage are rare in the
Netherlands. From 1864 onwards, stage
adaptations can be traced with a certain
regularity, for example Nelly was the first
play to be performed by the company of the
Amsterdam Citytheater and the Dordrecht
theater. Scrooge en Marley added to the
repertoire of Rob van Reijn's pantomime
theater in 1989, is the latest adaption.
Although certain comic aspects have been
retained in David Lean's screen adaption of
Great Expectations, Van Waes mentions a
number of criticisms. For one thing, she
deplores the way Lean thinks 'big' with
respect to costumes, scenery, etc. and
ignores the Dickensian psychology of small,
every-day happenings.
At the Spaarnestad Photo Archive in Haarlem
two sets of pictures regarding Dickens can
be found. Especially interesting are the
pictures of the Tabard Players in Southwark.
In het midden van de negentiende eeuw
waren Dickens en Tennyson de belangrijkste
vertegenwoordigers van hun respectievelijke
genres. Hun lezerspubliek behoorde tot alle
sociale klassen, maar afgezien daarvan waren
er vele verschillen: Dickens was een typisch
stadsmens, terwijl Tennyson opgroeide op het
platteland. Bovendien liepen hun afkomst en
opleiding nogal uiteen. Wel werden ze allebei
later bekritiseerd om hun sentimentele
manier van schrijven. Beiden waren zéér
Engels en ieder vertolkte het Engelse leven
op zijn manier.
Both Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy
were born in poor families, each acquiring
wealth by means of writing. Neither of the
two contemporaries received what is called a
'good' education, but obviously this has not
hampered them in later years.
Potgieter's prompt translation of one
Journey from The Pickwick Papers shows his
enthusiasm. But apart from translating, he
also made some structural alterations in the
story line, and deliberately suppressed
satirical elements of the original.
Furthermore, the descriptions and speech
habits of the characters are modified,
reduced or even eliminated, which makes for
less picturesque narrative.
