Dickens en zijn standbeelden
Dickens overleed op donderdag 9 juni 1870 ten gevolge van een hersenbloeding. Hij was 58
jaar oud geworden. Engeland was in rouw gedompeld, Koningin Victoria stuurde een
condoleance-telegram vanuit Balmoral en de "Times" suggereerde dat de beroemde schrijver
een laatste rustplaats verdiende in Westminster Abbey, te midden van Engeland's grootste
schrijvers. Hoewel Dickens bij leven te kennen had gegeven in alle soberheid begraven te
willen worden, in Rochester of Cobham of Shorne, werd hij toch op dinsdagochtend 14 juni in
Westminster Abbey begraven, tijdens een eenvoudige plechtigheid waarbij alleen de naaste
familie aanwezig was. Er werd op zijn graf een gedenksteen geplaatst met de tekst: "Charles
Dickens. Bom February the seventh 1812. Died June the Ninth 1870".
In zijn testament, opgemaakt op 12 mei 1869, had Dickens over zijn begrafenis het volgende
geschreven:
"I emphatically direct that I be buried in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly
private manner; that no public announcement be made of the time or place of my burial; that at
the utmost not more than three plain mourning coaches be employed; and that those who
attend my funeral wear no scarf, cloak, black bow, long hat-band, or other such revolting
absurdity. I DIRECT that my name be inscribed in plain English letters on my tomb, without
the addition of "Mr." or "Esquire". I conjure my friends on no account to make me the subject
of any monument, memorial, or testimonial whatever. I rest my claims to the remembrance of
my country upon my published works, and to the remembrance of my friends upon their
experience of me in addition thereto."
