hun vorderingen hadden aangetoond, kreeg ieder zijn deel pro rata parte. Indien de assignee hieraan
niet voldeed, kon de Insolvent Debtors' Court op verzoek van schuldeisers of schuldenaar een
andere assignee benoemen. Als 'assignee' werd
benoemd een vroegere buurman uit Chatham, Richard Newnham. Nu waren de Newnhams geliefde
buren. Toen in 1827 Charles nog een broertje kreeg, werd deze Augustus Newnham gedoopt. Het is
mogelijk, dat deze vriendschap Newnham weinig ijverig maakte om Johns boedel onder de
schuldeisers te verdelen. Op een
vergadering van schuldeisers op 3 januari 1825 werd een andere 'assignee' benoemd, nl. een vroegere
huisheer John Dodd, ofschoon deze zelf van november 1823 tot februari 1824 in de
schuldgevangenis had gezeten. Óp 22 October 1825 meldde de London Gazette-.
In the Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors. - In the matter of the petition of John Dickens,
an Insolvent. Notice is hereby given, that the Assignee under this Court of the above-named
Insolvent, will on Wednesday the 2d day of november next, at Eleven O'clock in the Forenoon,
attend at the office of Mr.JHenslow, Rochester, in the County of Kent, to make a dividend out
of the money belonging to the estate of the Insolvent, amongst the Creditors whose debts are
expressed in the
schedule, admitted as sworn to and filed under this Court by the said Insolvent.
Op 13 november 1826 vond een tweede en laatste verdeling plaats (8).
De mededeling van John Forster, dat Johns broer William uit de erfenis van hun moeder de
schuld betaald zou hebben en John daardoor vrijkwam, is hiermede voldoende weerlegd. Immers er
zou dan geen assignee zijn benoemd.
