The last visit
Kort hierna werd de tweede editie van Sketches by Boz uitgegeven met als extra
trekpleister toegevoegd het dramatische The Drunkard's Death. Het schijnt dat Dickens
in dit soort verhalen een bijzondere 'publiekstrekker' zag. Aan de eerste editie had hij
toegevoegd A Visit to Newgate. In de advertentie van deze editie had hij geschreven:
"...these volumes will comprise several new tales - including a very powerful article,
entitled 'A Visit to Newgate'." Op 7 januari 1836 schreef hij "I am highly gratified with
Ainsworth's opinion of the Visit to Newgate... Has he seen the Black Veil?" Kort te voren
had hij over The Black Veil aan zijn a.s. vrouw geschreven:
...an extraordinary idea for a story of a very singular kind occurred to me this
morning, and I am anxious to commit it to paper before the impression it made upon
me is lost. I will shew it to you the moment it is finished.
En op 14 april 1836 aan zijn illustrator:
I am extremely anxious about 'The Stroller's Tale" - the more especially as many
literary friends, on whose judgment I place great reliance, think it will create
considerable sensation.
