1751, Ferdinand Count Fathom in 1752 en Lancelot Greaves in
1760. Hij vertaalde Gil Bias uit het Frans. Met zijn romans sluit
Smollett aan bij de traditie van het nieuwe realisme zoals dat
bedreven werd door Swift en Fielding.
Inmiddels is na het lezen van de titels van de romans van Smollett
een licht opgegaan. Immers wat las David Copperfield, in casu
Charles Dickens, in zijn jonge jaren?
"It was this. My father had left a small collection of books in a little
room up-stairs, to which I had access for it adjoined my own) and
which nobody in our house ever troubled. From that blessed little
room, Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, Humphrey Clinker, Tom
Jones, The Vicar of Wakefield, Don Quichote, Gil Bias, and
Robinson Crusoe."
En een paar regels verder: "I have been Tom Jones a child's Tom
Jones, a harmless creature for a week together. I have sustained my
own idea of Roderick Random for a month at a stretch,. I verily
believe." Aldus twee citaten uit David Copperfield.
En in het voorwoord van de 1ste goedkope editie van Nicholas
Nickleby, de Cheap Edition uit 1847 "I cannot call to mind, now,
how I came to hear about Yorkshire schools when 1 was not a very
robust child, sitting in bye-places, near Rochester Castle, with a head
full of Partridge, Strap, Tom Pipes and Sancho Panza;...".
Strap is de vriend, dienaar, compaan, spitsbroeder van Roderick
Random.
En nog een citaat, een brief die Dickens 2 november 1854 aan
Marcus Stone schreef:
My dear Stone
Perhaps you will kindly write me a Notice of Wilkie, for Household
Words? I Think it would be gratifying to him. Humphrey Clinker is
certainly Smollett's best. I am rather divided between peregrine
Pickle and Roderick randomboth extraordinarly good in their way,
which is a way without tendernessbut you will have to read them
both, and I send you the first Volume of peregrine as the richer of the
two, Ever affecy. CD"

RR is een pur sang roman picaresque. De Held Roderick Random
snelt van avontuur naar avontuur, wordt onterfd, vergokt zijn
kapitaal, scharrelt weer nieuw op, geeft dat met onbezonnen hand uit
in drinkgelagen, is voortdurend verliefd, wordt daarin even
voortdurend teleurgesteld en heeft het ene liefje na het andere. Duels,
