liefde, verloofde, sic the idea of that lovely charmer rather
increased than allayed the ferment of my spirits; and the young
paisanne had no reason to complain of my remembrance. Early in the
morning, the kind creatures left us to our reposeof whom we
took a tender leave after my companion had confessed them and
given them absolution."
and Dickens door F.D.Wierstra, Academisch proefschrift ter
"The debt which Dickens owes his predecessors is none of the
smallest, still he ranks with the very highest in the realm of fiction.
My comparing him with Smollett, his special favourite, from which
he borrowed largely, does not therefore imply anything derogatory
from the fecundity of his mind. As all higher knowledge is based on
comparison, we shall be able to appreciate Dickens the better when
studied in conjunction with his great predecessor."
